Where the Price Comes From
There are no figures on this page, because frame material, window count, glass package, style, access and the condition of the openings can each move a quote more than the size of the order. When you want estimates, window replacement cost sets them out and labels them clearly. Use how to choose to compare whoever quotes, and permits and HOA rules before you order.
What Every Replacement Job Includes
Whichever page you choose, the work follows the same outline. The installer measures each opening, confirms the frame and glass, orders the windows and removes the old ones. Then the new windows go in, and the gaps are sealed, trimmed and cleaned up. Where the job needs a permit, someone has to apply for it. Find out who before you sign.
Two things catch people out. Made-to-order windows take time to arrive, so the date of the survey is not the date of the install. And rot behind an old frame is often found only once the old window is out, so ask how extra repair work would be priced and approved before it starts.
What to Have Ready for the Survey
A list of the windows and doors you want replaced and any you want to leave alone is a good start. Note which ones stick, leak or fog, and any that open onto a deck or a fire escape. If you live in a condo or a community with an association, find out whether you need its approval for the style and color. Photos of each opening help. So does a rough idea of the frame material you prefer, though "not sure" is fine.
Not Sure Where to Start?
Replace or repair, vinyl or fiberglass, insert or full-frame? None of these is a decision you have to make before you ask for a quote. Describe what you have and what bothers you, and the survey covers the rest. This is general information, not advice on your own home.
